Research Topic : Role of mismatch repair gene hMSH2 in malignant glioma
"Began the research mentorship with no prior experience at all in research and publications. Dr. Manuel was incredibly helpful in teaching me the fundamentals of research and mentoring me through the publication process. Throughout the research process, I never stopped learning about glioblastoma and scientific research. I was very happy to see the article published as it represents the first major step in myjourney of research. It really helped me get my foot in the door for future research conducted at the university level."

Research Topic : Novel Biomarkers in MRN Complex and Inflammatory CCL Genes in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma
"I worked with Dr. Manuel in 2021 and 2024 as a postgraduate medical student and my experience has been exceptional! As part of my 2-month virtual research internship, Dr. Manuel has taken the time to teach me about biomedical sciences, translational cancer research, and the basics of R. With his mentorship and guidance, I was able to complete my head and neck cancer research project and prepare a poster for presentation at research conferences. Dr. Manuel is an excellent research mentor who advocates for his mentees’ success, and I highly recommend uMaster for students who are interested in pursuing research with potential publication opportunities.."

Research Topic : Exploring the correlation between mismatch repair (MMR) genes and the fraction of genome
"Throughout this journey, what I value more than the hard skills I learned, such as coding or data analysis, were the soft skills –– namely the newfound appreciation I gained for the research field. From sorting data in Excel based on our inclusion/exclusion criteria to identifying normalities and which statistical tests to use for analysis in RStudio, I understood the tenacity and patience required to conduct research, even if the study yields negative results and rejects your hypothesis. This rigorous yet satisfying process revealed the effort talented scientists undertake to create, for instance, something so seemingly simple as a Tylenol tablet. I am incredibly grateful for the patient and thoughtful mentoring by Dr. Manuel during this process, regardless of any obstacle in our path. He ensured that I understood every detail of the research, allowing me to gain a sense of ownership over the work we accomplished. I truly could not have asked for a more flexible, caring, and encouraging mentor to boost me in the right direction at all times. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this research experience, and I look forward to continuing scientific bioinformatics research in the future as I enter college and medical school! "

Research Topic : Translational data analysis research to understand molecular biology
"The mentoring journey with you has been truly enlightening and instrumental in shaping my approach to research and data analysis. Your guidance not only helped me enhance my technical skills in R, Python, and data visualization but also provided valuable insights into conducting quantitative research methodologies such as systematic reviews and meta-analyses effectively. What I appreciated most about our sessions was your ability to simplify complex concepts and methodologies, making them accessible and applicable to real-world projects. Your encouragement and constructive feedback throughout the process greatly boosted my confidence in handling large datasets and deriving meaningful conclusions. By the end of our mentoring sessions, I felt more equipped and empowered to tackle challenging research projects independently. Your mentorship has undoubtedly been a cornerstone in my professional growth, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned from your expertise.. "

Research Topic : Comprehensive data analysis in Biomedical research and Healthcare
"During my internship at uMaster, I had the privilege of being mentored by Jeru Sir. His guidance and expertise were invaluable as I navigated the world of data analysis. This was field was relatively new to me and he introduced me to the field with such ease and I started enjoying the learning process right away. Jeru Sir effortlessly organized and manipulated complex data. His attention to detail and analytical mindset made a significant impact on my skills. He is extremely knowledgeable and patient which are the skills one looks for in a mentor. Even after the internship concluded, Jeru Sir continued to support and guide us. His dedication to our growth and development is commendable. I can confidently say that he is a wonderful mentor, and I am grateful for the knowledge and skills I gained under his guidance"

Research Topic : Characterization of gene expression data
"For someone who just graduated out of high school I was definitely intimidated to be mentored for a research area I was interested in, but did not have a lot of experience in. Being mentored gave me the confidence to change my major before attending ASU. The whole process was oriented on work based on our weekly meetings, where I was explained information. Dr Jeru Manoj was also immensely kind when I asked questions and gave me the confidence to develop a curious mindset which aided me immensely in my biomedical engineering degree."

Research Topic : Bioinformatics and research databases tools for engineering research
"Throughout my internship, I have learned invaluable skills and gained insights that I am confident will serve me well in my future endeavors. Your mentorship and willingness to share your knowledge have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of the basics in Bioinformatics and enhancing my skills in Literature Review and introduction to various databases during the course of my first year of Biotechnology Engineering. The best part of my internship was even though I was in my first year of engineering and not yet exposed to my actual field which begins in second year, I had learnt the basics skills needed for Research which gave me an upper hand than the rest of my class to be having done an internship in my first year. I am genuinely grateful for your support and encouragement throughout this internship. You were very patient in teaching me the concepts again when asked and cleared all my doubts even though asked multiple times. By the end of it I felt really accomplished and a feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction."

"Being part of the mentoring program at uMaster with Dr. Jeru Manuel has been an amazing experience. The program is really unique because it lets students like me create our own research projects from scratch, starting with forming our own hypotheses. It’s great because we get the freedom to work on something we’re genuinely interested in, which isn’t something you always get to do in schools or universities. Personally, I found it really exciting to learn how to do research on my own. I finally got to put all the theory I’ve been learning into practice, and that’s something I’ve always felt was missing in my education. Dr. Manuel was super helpful throughout the process—he patiently helped me shape my hypothesis and answered all my questions, no matter how small. He really put in the effort to make sure my project was the best it could be and taught me all the research methods I needed to know. This program has given me a lot of confidence in my research skills, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s looking to take their academic journey to the next level.."
